On Saturday, January 7th, 2006, strains of jazz and a blazing fireplace welcomed 19 people out of the dreary morning and into the inviting lobby of The Superior Cafe. Owner Lisa Boehme was delighted to discover that her morning dream of an altruistic group such as The Grapevine actually existed...

What a find The Superior is!  The cafe is brand new, having opened less than three months ago on October 25th, 2005. We don't want to spoil your fun in discovering the ever-changing decor surprises, so you'll just have to visit and experience them yourself.

As co-owner/operator of the former La Boehme Restaurant and JAVA Coffeehouse, Lisa knows the dining industry. After introducing servers Sarah and Susan, she said she had assigned herself staffing duties and immediately hired Edmonton's Sam Chalmers as head chef, as well as Victoria chef Gizelle Gratton. Bev Pedersen then came on board as general manager.

Lisa invites you to enjoy a leisurely 2% Jazz coffee in front of the fire or perhaps to share a dessert or a choice of tapas from the exciting menu that offers many vegetarian items. She recommends that you order according to your appetite—for just a bite... 1 small plate, for dinner... 2-3.

The Superior is proud to serve only the best and freshest ingredients BC has to offer, from organic fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, to local micro-brewery beer and wine. We particularly recommend the Beef Wasabi Rolls, Salad Nicoise, and yummy Root Chips—crispy-fried beets, yams, taro root, lotus, parsnips, and seasonal root vegetables.

"It was truly an inspirational and rewarding day—not only for me, but for the staff as well. I so admire the random acts of kindness shown by you all today."

Lisa Boehme, owner/operator

Located at the west end of Superior Street, opposite James Bay's Fisherman's Wharf, it's housed in a 1912 building that originated as the Victoria Seamen's Institute for off-duty seamen. Some of our fathers or husbands may well have lingered here. The building later became the Victoria Unitarian Church.

More recently, Lisa's father John has been living on the premises while operating an antique and art gallery on the main floor (more on that later). When the historic building went on the market 14 years ago, Lisa couldn't stand the thought of it becoming just another condo complex. She and her father bought it and Lisa and her two daughters Lulu and Emma moved in upstairs. Now that the restaurant has opened, both girls work there.

As an avid gardener (oh, and did we mention that she's an artist too?), Lisa has created an inviting garden and courtyard for future outside summer dining and cinema.

The Superior showcases live acoustic music every Thursday and Saturday from noon until 2 p.m., and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6-9 p.m. Sounds vary from classical to jazz to daughter Emma playing Canadian fiddle tunes. For particulars, check the website entertainment schedule.

The cafe also offers Open Cinema. For details re. January 18th DINE, DRINK AND THINK, as well as future events, log on to www.opencinema.ca.

But there's more! The large abstracts decorating the lobby and walls were painted by dad John Boehme. If you're lucky, his small antique/art gallery will be open so you can view his eye-popping antiques in two rooms that feel as if you've stepped back into another era. Rumour has it that John is a fountain of antique knowledge. You can contact him at 920-4200.

Round up someone special and make a date to experience The Superior, a casual, eclectic environment with live music. A great place for conversation, coffee and delicious food in small bites.
