On Saturday, September 10th, 2005, twenty-four people and a big bouquet of balloons crowded into tiny Café Madrid. The Victoria Grapevine announced that they'd chosen Café Madrid as the "best-of-the-bunch for the month", evoking a heart-warming response from owner Javier Alvarez. He was thrilled and so were we!
First-time Grapeviner Susana provided Spanish interpretation so the owner of Café Madrid would be certain to understand The Grapevine experience and background. "I love Victoria!" Javier enthused as he served a generous sampling of authentic Spanish food - paella, Spanish omelette, and either a croquette or Salad Picasso. Amidst flamenco music and high-volume chatter, Grapeviners old and new snuggled shoulder to shoulder in a space designed for a much smaller group.
It was obvious that everyone felt at home at Café Madrid, which we attribute to the Javier's warm welcoming demeanor. The food was delicious and the "samples" generous enough to serve as a satisfying lunch.
Originally from Spain, Javier and his wife moved from Toronto a year ago and he opened the café three months later. Specializing in paellas and tapitas, Café Madrid offers take-out food and catering for any sized event.
