Funky, High-energy Cafe
Wholesome Food - Reasonably Priced
Warm Welcome of Owner

On Saturday, September 9th, 2006, 21 Grapevine participants marched excitedly into Delicado's Cafe... to discover that owner Sarah Brenner had gone shopping for cilantro! While we all exited the funky cafe to hide around the corner, staff members called Sarah and claimed they needed her on-site immediately...

Delicado's specializes in catering to people
with food allergies and special diets.

Five minutes later we all swarmed in again, surprising Sarah with our balloon bouquet and announcing that Delicado's Oak Bay had been chosen "best of the bunch". "You're going to make me cry", she warned, before ordering complimentary chips and salsa for everyone.

Delicado's is inviting and energetic with bouncy salsa music and a colourful southwest decor punctuated with decals of Coyote, New Mexico's mythical "Trickster".

The licensed southwestern cafe and deli serves reasonably priced homegrown food made from scratch. Flavours range from southwest U.S.A., Mexico and the Mediterranean via a large variety of roll-ups with beans, rice, corn, cheese, shrimp or chicken – or breakfast wraps with eggs. Next, choose a chipotle sauce ranging from ultra-mild to extra spicy. Specials change daily and you can eat in or take food home. In a rush? Phone to order ahead. Note that Delicado's specialty is catering to people with allergies or special diets.

The menu includes burritos, enchiladas, tortilla pies, and homemade soups. Roll-ups are $4.50-$7.55 each. The most expensive items cost $10.95 and fill the plate, guaranteeing to satisfy the biggest appetite: (a) Burrito el Grande (flour tortilla filled with chicken, shrimp or beans, southwest pica, and topped with salsa, cheese, tomatoes and sunflower sprouts) or (b) Coyote Combo (1 spinach burrito, one enchilada, with choice of chicken, shrimp or beans and a salad).

"I've been so welcomed to this community that it feels like home for me...
Thanks to neighbourhood support and people like you, word is spreading".

Sarah Brenner, owner/operator

Nine years ago Sarah lived in Nanaimo and wanted to open a Delicado's in Qualicum Beach, but with a 5-year old son and no business partner she couldn't swing it. Shelving the idea, she drove buses, worked in the bush, at a detox center, and accepted small contracts. By summer of 2005 she was ready to launch her dream. She sold her house and most of what she owned to follow her heart, but the night before signing her Qualicum contract she changed the location to her old stomping ground of Oak Bay. Delicado's Oak Bay opened on May 1, 2006, with Sarah and her son inviting business neighbours and people walking down the street to come in for a free meal.

The original Delicado's, based in Nanaimo, was a take-out place that expanded to become what is now the franchise training location. Today there are two cafes in Nanaimo, and one in Ucluelet, Vancouver and L.A. There is also a second Delicado's Cafe at 799 Fort Street, which opened in 2003 with three women owners all aged 24.

Eye catching decor, excellent service,
great music and wholesome, reasonably
priced food have made Delicado's famous
at its six locations!
